Method to My Madness

I had very few (if any?) people question WHY we had a Water Test and a Places/Cities Test. I found that interesting - and refreshing...sometimes you little demons remind me of even smaller little demons - 2-year-olds: always asking "WHY?" of everything. And then I heard or read how everyone studied or figured out ways to remember information. I also saw some of you take great initiative in preparing a study-map for the water test without my prodding. And even those of you who didn't think of doing that until I gave you a packet still had to look up, draw, and eventually memorize what body of water was where.

YOU LEARNED ON YOUR OWN GIVEN SOME SPECIFIC DATA.
YOU ADAPTED WHAT YOU KNEW ABOUT SPECIFICS AND APPLIED IT TO VAGUE DATA.

Now consider that the AP US History course earns you college credit only after "passing" ONE (1) TEST at the end of the year. It's all-or-nothing for you, with MOST of the preparation falling on YOUR shoulders and only SOME vagaries about WHAT will be tested. You will be expected to know MORE than what was presented in class, more than what the high school course formally (even informally) assessed.

Until I explain this further in class on Tuesday, consider WHAT you did to prepare for the two tests, HOW you FELT, and your result(s). I was very proud of you as a group...

Oh, reread it and remember I wrote "was" ---not am. Remember that I am a historian. What happened is in the past - learn from it, but never rest or rely upon it. Enjoy your weekend, and I'll see you Tuesday.

Oh the Places You'll Go...EXPLAINED

Final Directions for tomorrow's test:
You will have a full size sheet of paper. On one side will be PLACES. The other side will be CITIES. There will be a list of PLACES (in alphabetical order) with a number next to each PLACE. On the right side of the page, there will be a list of SLIDE NUMBERS (1-x). In the space next to each SLIDE NUMBER, you will place the CORRESPONDING PLACE NUMBER AFTER looking at the slide. Each slide will be visible for 30 seconds. Read the clue, look at the picture. Find the CORRESPONDING PLACE. Copy that PLACE NUMBER next to the SLIDE NUMBER. Easy. Repeat for CITIES. You will have a 3-second break between PLACES and CITIES. After 45 minutes, you will have 10 minutes to enter your choices using the clickers.

You DO NOT need to know COUNTRIES for CITIES.
You DO NOT need to know CITIES for PLACES.

NO TALKING OR INTERRUPTING.
NO TIME EXTENSIONS.

You will do fine...if you studied the pictures and listened when originally presented.

Guns, Germs, and Steel

Yes - we are watching this series TWTh. I am going nuts losing students for testing and activities - it's actually kind of ridiculous. So, You will have a "viewer's guide" (also known as a worksheet) for each part. All three will be due Friday. This way, if you miss class, you can bring your flash drive, grab a guide, and watch at home.

On Friday, you'll have a 90-slide test on PLACES and CITIES. It will be timed (45 minutes to watch and match) followed by 10 minutes to enter your test into the clickers. Please Study.

We'll debrief the PENNY CITIES and GG&S next week - after Memorial Day.

Lastly - I changed the grades on the portal - the tests are now shown with RAW scores rather than percentages. I'll input other things later this week.

Water Water Everywhere

So, I gave you a test with ALL Bodies of Water included. HA! I will use a sliding scale to be determined, but I am sure there will be a couple of perfect scores. We'll be moving forward this week with some BBB, so expect to use your textbooks again. Then there is Friday's Fun Day! A powerpoint. With Pictures. You SHOULD know them! Hint Hint.

Calorie Counter

We started off with a ROMOTHINK: Would you lie, cheat, and/or steal to earn more money in your career? My point is/was to get you to think about WHY you are in school, and WHY you are tasked with BBB (Boring Busy Bookwork). Sometimes it's to get a learning SKILL like reading, finding, analyzing, interpreting, presenting, etc. Yet other times it's simply to have a guide from which to study "things" you should know.

I segued into a discussion/lesson on calories and access to health. We have enough food in the world to satisfy ALL NEEDS, and there is even plenty of energy to satisfy MOST WANTS. Yet we are still full of "Haves" and "HAVE-NOTS." WHY? Is it because of liars, cheaters, and thieves? I doubt it, but the concept of deserving more and then taking it does play a part...

Sometimes when you lie, cheat, and/or steal - you end up not only hurting yourself, but others you love and return that concern for you. Don't ever forget that, at some point, we are all in this together.

Early to Bed---Miss the Surprise

Your Water test will be MONDAY. We're going to watch a short vid about cities tomorrow and maybe something about NYC or even MPLS on Friday. I think Softball/Basebeall "end" this week for some teams (or next week), and the whole swine flu (OK - H1N1) thing has passed us by so we'll be getting back into the swing of things for our remaining 3-4 weeks. You guys and gals really need to:
1. Stop stressing - NO surprises on the Water test
2. Stop using the blog for Want Ads
3. Stop using the blog as a time-waster in 3rd period Yearbook
4. Start enjoying your lives again...think of how fast this year has flown by...

Weak Brain

I need some people to prep themselves for "ROMO NOT HERE" awareness. Near the end of the year, I like to "quiz" students on norms...what would you do if I left no directions for a sub? Could you find something of interest or need to complete as a class? We'll find out next time...in E5.

RIvers, Landforms, Buildings, and Cities, Oh My!

Too bad you're not Keira, Jordan, Avi, or Sam - they're earning perfect scores for the Rivers/Landforms exam and possibly some credit for cities/buildings. Fair compensation for answering the call to help us out with the Model UN on Friday.

For the rest of you, I'll have spare handouts tomorrow and we'll continue the slideshow. There are some AMAZING cityscapes yet to be seen and shared. I'd also like everyone to learn a little about Pei, Philip Johnson, and Frank Lloyd Wright. There will be some EC available.

Places, Snow, and NO

You will need at least 64MB free on your flash drive for all of the pics. We'll go through them in class over the next two days - while I give you some HW for something completely different.

Watched Dead Snow. Wow. Clever. Fun. Cool. Too many intestines though - not enough brains. I enjoyed the homages to previous films, but there were still many questions left unanswered - HOW did they BECOME zombies? My biggest pet peeve is the use of fast (albeit slow in the snow) zombies. They're dead! They should lumber, toddle, but continue pursuit at any and all costs! I heard there is gonna be a sequel set in Iraq - Dead Sand - with a bunch of zombies led by Saddam Hussein.

Am I serious? NO!!! But it does sound fun, right? Some US troops on their FINAL mission somewhere in Iraq get caught up in a fight for their lives...and they must team up with the insurgents they were hunting in order to battle the true forces of evil. I think I'm on to something here. COPYRIGHT 2009.

Can't wait to catch Star Trek sometime this week - heard it was amazing. But I'd ratehr watch the movie I just came up with on-the-fly.

City Problems

You read about three, assumed the identity of an interest group, presented your case, discussed with others, and either tried to or did come to a decision. All within 45 minutes. Wow. I was VERY impressed by everyone's efforts today. BUT...I need MORE! Before we tackle the Minneapolis Public Schools problem (money, closings, moves, boundaries, etc.), I need you to reflect on what happened today...

SO, in the COMMENTS, an email, or simply printed copy, please tell me how it went today. What did you learn? What worked? What did not work? 150-200 Words. Enjoy your weekend...Oh, "due" Monday, but I'll take it Wednesday.

The Perfect Number is 5

I have 2 GREAT candidates who have volunteered to go on the Model UN excursion May 15th. It is an all-day event and you will be excused from classes. Problem is, I need 5 students. Some who had volunteered could not make it on that day or chickened out. It will require a little bit of research on one of 3 countries. So, here is the LAST chance/request. Let me know ASAP if you want in on this opportunity.

Make sure you complete your Penny Cities Map and come to class ready to solve urban problems on Thursday.

Also - if you have a FLASH DRIVE, bring it on Monday. I will let you copy the folder of picture files to be used on the exam in 2 weeks. The physical features/water test will be next week.

We are working on Chapter 5: Urban Sprawl in class Thurs/Fri. For HW (due Monday), I want you to identify and define 3 problems we are facing (or possibly will face) in Minneapolis. There will be an EC opportunity for you to explain YOUR solution to the problem - explained next week.

Consider the Five Themes of Geography and how you can apply their use in the video. We'll have to figure out the Skype thing so I can give you directions from my staff development site...oh well. Casserole vs. Hot Dish

In 6th period today, we had a brief discussion regarding the Minnesota Hot Dish. I hate it. Yuck. Seriously, would you eat this? Ugh. Blech. Ick. That's why we use "dish" in MInnesota - to make sure "ish" is in there somewhere. Blah.

We started the Urban Geography slideshow today. We should finish it tomrrow, and I'll have you do some BBB - remember what that stands for? - on Wednesday after entering the World Test selections for scoring. Everyone should take their textbook tomorrow - I think we'll have you turn them in on Thursday or Friday. I hate them, we hardly ever use them, and they take up space.

Yup - we finished the movie today (except for 5th period). Regardless - you will be taking the World exam tomorrow. Whole class period. Hard copy AND clicker entry. No extensions. Please remember to be quiet when finished. Bring a book, some other classwork, or a pillow. So long as you are not disruptive, I do not care what you are doing (NO MP3 PLAYERS!).

Romo Must Be Crazy

So, we're into day 3 of "The Gods Must Be Crazy." You have hopefully been keeping track of the plot, sequence of events, characters (including objects), and interactions between everything/everyone. You'll be making a poster depicting these connections on Friday.

I distributed two handouts (white = cities and gold = sites/buildings) for you to study from for a test in a couple of weeks. The left-hand column is for WHERE, while the right-hand column is for a description. The test will be based on photo identification. There will be a slide-show with a picture asking you to either indicate the WHERE or NAME of what is being shown.

So many people wanted to increase a military presence on the seas, destroy the bases on the Somali coast, blah, blah, blah. Dig Deeper! What CAUSED the pirates to emerge? They are willing and able (think economics - DEMAND) to risk their lives to seize ships at sea rather than stay ashore and work/run businesses. WHY?

Today was poster day. You had 45 minutes to begin and finish your poster. Too many questions about the dress code...simply look nice. IMagine you are interviewing for a nice job. What would you wear? Think of what you would be buried in, which might happen if you wear something inappropriate. And, as always, make sure you have clean underwear. I am usually not disappointed by what girls wear (blouse, pants/skirt, dress, etc.)...but it always seems that some of the guys just don't get it. So, guys should consider the gentlemen below:

RetUrN of ROMOTHINK

I had you consider a ROMOTHINK today after sharing the week's schedule with you. Wow - a lot of stuff happening this week - so be ready!

Today was kind of a "welcome back" to school day. I hope you remembered to "dig deeper" regarding problems and solutions - like how to deal with piracy out of Somalia. It's not about sending more warships to the region - stabilize the country and create other economic avenues for the people. I guarantee you piracy will decrease.

We also explored the concept of consequences and trade-offs. No matter how much good something may be, it has a cost. Are you willing to give something up for someone else's improvement? Would you trade away you video games, cable/sat, iPod, and/or internet to feed a poor family? How closely connected are we in our "global village" - a term we will be exploring in more detail this quarter. Someone should look it up and find a GREAT link - I'll give EC to the person who finds the BEST site.

There are good ideas and bad ideas...and bad jeans.

Ugh...Just One More...

Day? Week? Weekend?

Nope.

It all starts again...and we have a goofy week ahead of us. Tomorrow is a regular day, but it gets REALLY crazy for the rest of the week. For example, I do not see you on Tuesday. While you will be taking your MCA test, I will be entertaining seniors - I'm thinking a couple of movies will do. Then you spend the second half of your day attending your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd period classes. On Wednesday, you follow the same plan, but attend 4,5,6 as you would normally - which means you will be working on your posters on Wednesday.

On Thursday - we have the Model UN. You participate - I simply stand by and watch. I'll go over the day's schedule in class on Monday - before we do a ROMOTHINK and after I explain the week's schedule...

Tweeting and Time Travel

We're on break - so no school stuff for 2 more days...right?

Just wondering how many of you tweet...if you're confused, look it up.

Also, I found this handy flier you should always carry with you...just in case you find yourself in the past. Even though I believe traveling back in time is completely IMPOSSIBLE, it is a great story device - when used correctly. Check it out and actually read it - you will at least learn something. To learn more about time travel in general, look around.

Lastly, we are nearing the time when tv programs are either renewed or canceled for next fall. We all have favorite shows "on the bubble" (Kings, Terminator, Life) but sometimes cancellation is a blessing. If you have time to laugh and cry at the same time watch the clip below, knowing Supertrain did not make the cut in 1979. Imagine traveling back in time to that era, having to live life in that show? Yikes.

Cheating and Plagiarism are UNcool

Since these are technically from the same author, it is OK. But you should know that I believe this to he a GREAT visual example of plagiarism...but its from the same studio...imagine if it had been a Pixar-to-Dreamworks (or vice-versa) version. Either way, it's shocking...and sad.

NO FINAL TEST...for anyone...however...

If someone asks me if there is a test, what is on the test, when the test begins, or why we don't have a final test, guess what? I'll give you the meanest, most difficult test imaginable. Rely on your peers. Read, listen to, and follow directions...but internalize them as well. Meditate if you have to. Trust yourself!

Now go make sure you have a GREAT paper...

Anyone know who said that? This is it...the LAST post about the essay due Thursday. And nothing I write is new - it's been written before...and will NEVER be written again...

The essay should embed your answers to the 6 questions - maybe not answering all of them. Remember the "Pennies a Day" review? You had 13 questions and used your answers in a statement - not ALL answers, but many of them. For YOUR Nation's Position Paper, emphasize what is important to YOUR nation. If it needs help in achieving one or two MDGs, focus on those. If it hates them all, explain why. I have proofread a few essay samples - every one was different, yet every one was perfect. Understand?

Tomorrow will all be about Colonialism and you'll have to show me your Africa "packet" from chapter 21 (?), I believe. I will also give you some last-minute instructions about what should be on the BACK of your essay (a list of your sources). On Thursday, I have decided to follow one of two possible tracks...

Both tracks will have you each write a statement about your efforts and achievements thus far (regarding Model UN). You will argue why you deserve more credit than your partner. You will also explain why your partner may deserve more credit than you. After reading one-another's statement, you'll give each other a point value out of 100 SHARED points. One person can earn 60, while the other earns 40. The catch is your grade will be out of 65 points. Someone will be short-changed, unless you both agree to 50 points and a grade of C (75%). If both are deserving of an A, I will determine that based upon your statements and my inquiries.

Then you will take a 50-question test.
Or there will be no test.

It all depends on how many more already-answered questions I am asked or annoying "what are we doing today?" interruptions. I have the test already entered. It includes questions from Darfur, Star Trek, Africa as a whole, Model UN, country locations, and even a little bit of econ thrown in for good measure. So, go ahead...make my day. Ask me questions that I have already answered numerous times. Fret over things you should already know. Or - simply pay attention, learn, do your best, help others, and be kind...then I'll let you go with no final exam. Deal?

UNder the gUN

Hah - got two of them in there! I may cut the blog next quarter - I am getting comments and emails asking me questions that are UNnecessary if you follow the blog. Assignments, upcoming activities/tests, etc. are always posted here. Please do not waste your time - or mine by asking me things you can find out by simply going back and re-reading the blog.

Final exam - Thursday. What will it cover? Maybe the world nations. Definitely NOT the bodies of water. Maybe it will be about MDGs. Perhaps there will be some things about Darfur. Everything from the past quarter is fair game. See - that is what a "final" is about...it measures whether or not you have been keeping pace with class expectations. A "final" should not be about learning for the first time. A study guide should not be necessary. You have the blog, assignments, etc. Use them.

IN class today, we are watching a film about Ghana and how difficult it is to move from undeveloped to developing to developed nation status. Is the IMF bad? What about the World Bank? The video was partly financed by a religious group, but the questions asked by the main participant (Robert Beckford) are valid. If you missed class or want to share it, go here.

Hopefully you found today beneficial. I used to give an interest inventory to all of my students at the beginning of the year in order to get to know them (you), but the district formalized the procedure so I cut that out. You should do one every year, but remember that you are never bound by its advice. Use it as a guide, not as a Calvinist regime of planning for your future.

Tomorrow will be a grade day. I'll clean up the gradebook. Check the portal to see what may be missing. Find it (at home, in the depths of your bag, maybe somewhere in your locker - or heck, I may even have it) and we'll get it checked off. You'll also watch a short video describing Model UN.

The essay should simply incorporate the answers to the six questions (Megan posted them previously) while opening with your (nation's) stance on continuing, modifying, or throwing out the MDGs. Is it worthwhile? Has it been effective? SHould more or fewer indicators be measured - using what levels? One (1) page. Single (or 1.5) spaced. 12 pt font. We'll do the poster after Spring Break.

UNeasy about the essay/Overall Project?

I will write this clearly...remember the "Pennies-a-Day" written statement? You had 13 questions to answer and then turn your answers into a mini-review of the film. You are doing the same thing for your UN Essay. Take the six questions from yesterday's handout - someone PLEASE type them into the comments section - and use your answers to guide you in writing your (read: nation's) POSITION on the ERADICATION OF POVERTY and how the UN should play its part in continuing, modifying, or eliminating the Millennium Development Goals. You should not even be worrying about the essay yet - Wait until Friday.

Until then, learn as much as you can about your nation - so you are better able to quickly persuade and work with other nations at the congress. STOP FREAKING OUT!!! If you have been researching and learning about your country (history, economic situation, friends/foes, concerns, MDG status, etc.) you are doing fine. If you have been wasting your time, goofing off, and not supporting one another, you will be ill-prepared and not only suffer gradewise, but you will be miserable at an ALL-DAY EVENT planned around this lesson.

To you, the UNimportant

So much flying at ya and confusion abounds, right? Here is the summary of what you should know:

The Model UN will take place on Thursday, April 16. That is the first week of 4th quarter. You will have to be dressed nicely and will be working as a member of the General Assembly (UNGA), the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), or the Security Council (UNSC). I will assign you to your group tomorrow or Friday.

You are representing your nation - not yourself. That means you will possibly defend or criticize actions you personally do not support. Your essay will have to be a full response to the six questions of page six on the handout you received today. Can someone retype those in the comments section, please? I decided you should follow the same criteria as before, but please include a title - your country (and subgroup). It will be due next Thursday, as your final assignment for the quarter...but not the FINAL assessment..HINT HINT.

When you return next quarter, we will take a day to make the poster...it will be more like an advertisement. You should have some pictures (various sizes) that depict your nation. For example, Zambia: 11.5 Million people need your help. WE can offer great deals on copper for any and all wire needs! But we can't do it alone...Our previous "sponsor," Great Britain, has other needs to address. Blah, blah, blah.

You'd be sharing your population, resources, needs/wants, history, etc. I will get you one more day for in-class research next week. As it stands now - you have tomorrow in the Media Center and Thursday in the CCC. On Friday, we'll touch base and ask/answer any lasting questions you may have.

We are AHEAD OF SCHEDULE, so do not worry. If you have your packet filled out and can recall the basic info, you are doing fine. By the end of the week, you should be able to list some allies/foes, resources, GDP, needs/wants, and have an understanding of G8/G20 politics and economics. Read and reread the packets from today and yesterday.

Nothing is UNpossible

So we went over the Country Status Report again - and I showed you how to actually do RESEARCH - on your own! You should read up on the MDG and know where your country stands. I also think you should check out the UN Data page for info - all part of the UNDP. For basic pages on your country and the UN, go here. You should also know if your country is a HIPC. You still confused? Wiki those things for more basic explanations. Please make sure you know about the G8 and G20 as well. I just gave you MANY links. Use them.

I have indefinitely postponed the World/Water tests. I want you to focus on this Model UN project. And I promise to have updated grades by tomorrow...

Change of Plans, Part Infinity

World Test is moved to Tuesday-maybe Friday. We go to the CCC on Thursday for more "My Life Plan" stuff. You'll hopefully be in the MC again on Weds (inner lab, hopefully). Posters will be "due" the following Mon/Tues. Bodies of Water test will be your "final" the last week. You'll take a landofrms test beginning next quarter. If anyone wants to retake a low test, You'll be able to do so next week after school (T-Th). You can pick ONE test to redo. Pass the word...

Schoolyard Rejects

Remember when teams were picked for games? You always dreaded being the "last pick" for fear of not really being wanted at all. So, to prevent such a scenario, I assigned the 2-person UN teams. You can see them posted outside my room, or even by Rees' door. If you demand a change or whine without a VALID reason I will automatically deduct your project grade 10% off the top. Part of this process is learning how to cooperate. Deal with it.

In class today, I briefly went over many things and showed you some world map quizzes online. I was hoping the speaker would show up - but that did not happen. I have the Information Packets ready for you to fill out with your research and have decided that each pair will be responsible for not only a position/policy paper, but a poster as well. That way you are EACH primarily responsible for at least one thing. You'll get the packet tomorrow or Friday. I'll get you some computer (or iPod???) time early next week. Then expect 1 day each week to work together on your essay/poster. Otherwise, consider this an at-home thing.

We'll explore the UN and I think a brief introduction to Foreign Policy is in order - perhaps Friday. You hopefully remember "National Interest" as a term since it will be very important in the coming weeks. I am going to try and get some rest so I can kick this dumb cold out (I still blame one of you). Be nice to your sleeping dog, give weightlifters their space, and treasure our musical heritage by not butchering it on national TV. Adios...

Kleenex or Tissue

Why do we use proprietary names even when referring to generic brands? as you can tell, I am focusing on Kleenex because of my cold. It wiped me out this past weekend - I had to cancel plans and everything, becoming a bored, tired, sick hermit.

In class today, we analyzed papers, you got your back, and then we were introduced to parliamentary procedure. Motions carried included the following: Adnan was kicked out of class, Amanda is no longer to be referred to as something from first quarter, and...forgot.

I will NOT be in class tomorrow. A speaker is scheduled to present Model UN. If the speaker is a no-show, you have a reading about Colonialism with a question handout. Keep the handout, but return the reading at the end of class. If the speaker does show up and does not take up the entire class period, use your time to study for the World test on Friday.

Couldn't resist. Got home early and decided to surf. Play some techno and go here. I've been doing A LOT of research on netbooks, and even saved up some $$$ to make a purchase. I just don't know if/when I should pull the trigger. It's all part of the plan to get a classroom set. Until then, we'll have to settle for a classroom set of iPod Touches. Yup - you read right. I (and about 4 other teachers) will be going to a training tomorrow afternoon to see how we can incorporate their use in our classrooms. It is for that reason that I will be glad YouTube is blocked - but you could use them effectively to browse for info on you assigned country for Model UN. It should be fun. Now, go watch the video below and wonder what DaVinci could have done with today's technology. Oh - and we just took the Europe test on Thursday.

Is That a Duck?

From Adnan again. We watched the Looney Tunes short twice today...once without sound and once with sound. Interestingly, I don't think the sound added much, except for possibly distracting you from the imagery - which was full of stereotypes. Some of the stereotypes were positive, while most seemed negative.

After tallying and averaging the Peer Review scores for your policy papers, I have to congratulate Claire for having the highest score. On Fiday, everyone will get a packet of several essays with varying scores so you can see what we're looking for. It should help you for your Position Paper that will be due at the end of the quarter. I'll assign it next week when you are also assigned your country for the Model UN activity all 9th graders will be participating in next quarter.

Tomorrow will have you suffer through the Europe test. Then we have the WORLD test next week. After that will be major bodies of water and landforms. The last test of the quarter will be cities...you'll get that list next week.

Which One is Supposed to be Jesus?

Yesterday was all about becoming introduced to an episode of Star Trek - I explained how there was an "Old" series and a "New" series. When exploring the cultish following of Star Trek, I compared it a bit to Christianity - there are people who prefer Old Star Trek as a more pure form, while others prefer the Next Generation. Still others prefer one of the otehr series, while some only enjoy the movies. It's all confusing, especially for Emma M., who asked the question heading this entry. To answer: NONE of them. it's just a show.

In class today, you took a short quiz to gauge your video retention. Then you completed a handout and we came up with our own contextual language (Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, etc.). The lesson is about communication - you need to know not only the words and definitions, but also the CONTEXT in order to truly understand what is being conveyed. That is why it is just as imoprtant to learn about the culture of a people as well as their native language. So, when Fresco played music all the time, it was good for class - but harmful to us and our environment, which is why we moved downstairs.

Romo and Students at Southwest

You (briefly) joined a cult today, having watched an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In "Darmok," captain Picard and the Enterprise crew found themselves unable to understand the aliens' language context. Hopefully, you figured it out. New poll to the right.

I put your test scores in the gradebook and hope to have the thing completely updated by Wednesday. And I promise to find a couple of videos for you since I neglected to share something last Friday.

For the week, we're focusing on communication. We'll also be taking the Europe test on Thursday during the Late Start. You can check out here and here for online quizzes. In addition to the obvious nations, you'll have to know the components of Great Britain (Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland) as well as the smaller nations of Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Andorra, and Monaco. Next week is the whole world.

Pirates

Adnan had another one today. I think a TV sitcom with Adnan, Xihao, Audrey M, and Jenna would be killer with ratings. Four bright people who ask/say some of the most ridiculous things.

Many have questioned the island names of the Caribbean test. Aside from the obvious, here is the key: 5 = Bahamas, 7 = Virgin Islands, 8 = Lesser Antilles, 9= Trinidad, 10 = Tobago, 11 = Netherlands Antilles. These are all areas where pirates roamed in the past on wooden ships with sails...just ask Adnan about Somali pirates.

In today's class, I mentioned Heaven's Gate, Jim Jones, and Family Guy. The Family Guy episode referenced in class today is titled "Chitty Chitty Death Bang."

First - someone figure who says that a lot. Next - we had a ROMOTHINK about religion today - is it god or bad? I basically wanted everyone to study it from both sides. As we approach more problem-solving and global issues, I need everyone to see the importance of Religion (we've looked at Economics, Language/Ethnicity, and Government already).

I also went over expectations. It still irks me that some students try to come up with excuses for not having work done. Today's policy paper was required to follow certain formatting guidelines. We discussed them in class every day and everything is on this blog. If you did not do it correctly, get one into me tomorrow for half-credit...better than a zero.

Disease

There is a disease in education - it's become more about the grade rather than the learning. The result has become more important than the process. Worry about that stuff when you leave the safe haven of academia.

But there is another disease we actually studies today - HIV/AIDS in Africa is an issue some chose to write about. I thought it would be good to take a day and look at the issue as a class. I also shared some info about Malaria. I look forward to your policy papers tomorrow.

Yes, My Little Masters

By checking the comments section (especially after yesterday's post), you would see that my students expect me to be sitting by a computer and checking blog comments at every moment. That is not the case. It may surprise many that, while I do work a lot at home (research, lesson planning, communication, etc.), I do have a personal life. Occasionally, I eat, drink, go potty, and *GASP* even watch the telly. Do not forget that teachers are human too (some of us, at least)

We took the quiz today and I showed you which Mexican states (Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Yucatan, Morelos, Sonora, Coahuila, Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, Chiapas) you need to know for next week's map test, which also includes ALL Canadian provinces, ALL US states, Central America, and the Caribbean. This will be the BIGGEST of all tests so far (until the final, which will have EVERY nation). STUDY!!!

Oceania, Latin America, Oh my!

Many people were out today, so we made do with who we had. Tomorrow's map quiz will cover South America and historical significance of Oceanic Regions/Islands. For South America, there will be NO matching (You will have to write the names of the countries ON the map). For Oceania, you'll simply have to match the island with historical significance. I'm looking at a 30-pt quiz.

How Old is that Potato?

We simply spent the hour going through the Africa packet, so I hope everyone recharged.

I also showed everyone my "Fun Box of Throwable Objects" after some spirited lack of work. Then Audrey M. asked the question that titles this post after I showed everyone the rock shaped like a potato that made a LOUD noise when dropped on the desk. Audrey believed it to be a REAL potato. Wow.

No Test, New Essay, and BBB

So, I officially assigned the policy paper essay today. It is due next Tuesday and can be about something other than Darfur - just get it cleared by me before you start researching & writing. Please take this assignment seriously. And NO "I" statements!

I asked for any missing work and reminded everyone to finish the three Darfur readings. We'll go over those things tomorrow, and I'll give you time to work on the packet I handed out today - you'll need to do some of the things as part of a group.

Please check the portal. Anything MISSING is probably too late to turn in. Anything with a BLANK has to be made up (test, video, etc.).

Lastly - do a litle bit of research for the Oceania test that will be combined with South America. I will NOT ask you WHERE those tiny islands are, but there will be some fact-matching. So, Thursday will be a test on South America and Oceania regions, plus some trivia regarding the more interesting islands in the Pacific.

Finally Friday

We finished the video (Heart of Darfur) after which I had you read and complete Reading #2. I assigned Reading #3 for the weekend...and do not forget about your Oceania test on Monday!!! I used the video-watching time to view and sign your course registration cards. If you forgot it, bring it to me next week.

If anyone missed one of the readings, know that I got them online here. You will have to write a one-page paper with STRICT formatting guidelines. Since you are reading this, I'll give you the assignment here:

What should be done about the situation in Darfur? Your recommendation must be realistic and justifiable. Do some research. The actual paper will be ONE PAGE in length. No longer. Be concise, cogent...and coherent. It must also follow these parameters:

one inch margins 12 point Times New Roman 1.5 spaced No title/heading. Name will be WRITTEN ON BACK.

Read. Write. Proofread. Re-Write. Read more/again. Re-write.

I will be giving you an extra credit assignment next week as well...

Adios...

It is NOT just about YOU...It IS about US

The next student who asks me about his/her grade risks being eaten alive by the monster within Romo. Patience is a virtue best exhibited in my classroom - I will no longer discuss individual grades DURING the school day. If you want to discuss your grade, see me before or after school. There are too many students, we have too many things to do, and nothing close to the necessary amount of time to stop everything for you when it is something that is better discussed at a different time. I LOVE talking with students about anything and everything. However, class-time is for the class as a whole. Please respect my expectations.

In class today, I tried to explain your course registration, which I will sign tomorrow. I want you to come in with your preferred choice checked off with a pencil. If I agree, I'll simply sign it and return it to you. If I disagree, we can talk about your choice/preference and come to a shared decision.

I asked everyone to write one (1) question on a small note card about Darfur or Africa in general that you have. We then began watching "Wide Angle: Heart of Darfur" from PBS. If you missed it or want to share it with someone, go to this site. We'll finish the video tomorrow and then go over another reading.

Dies Mercurii

You're smart - figure it out. I distributed some maps today and a homework sheet due Friday. You will need to use the collection of Africa maps (population, resources, etc.) given to you when you were making your New Africa map. You will have a test on the Pacific Region (Oceania, plus island nations of Asia) on Monday. You should know where the following places are located:
Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, East Timor, Brunei, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Melaniesia (specifically Fiji), Micronesia (specifically Guam and Bikini Atoll), and Polynesia (specifically Easter Island, Hawaii, Midway Atoll, Pitcairn, and Samoa).

We then began our Darfur focus. There are three readings (one of which we will do today) and a video I will split over Thursday and Friday (25 minutes each day). Then you'll get an assignment in the form of a Policy Paper due next week.

Tip of the Day: Wild animals are wild. They should not be confused as domesticated pets. Hence the use of the term wild when describing them. Now a woman is missing her face and some fingers while a teenage chimp is dead after it's "owner" gave it valium to calm down. Check out the side effects of valium use...this whole story is so sad.

It's Tuesday

I may not keep up the blog since I continue to get the "what did we do yesterday?" question from absent students. I think it's pretty obvious...if you check the blog!

Today we had the Asia test. You were given approximately 30 minutes. I still do not know why people are asking me questions about the maps and/or names of countries and territories. Is Hong Kong its own country? No, it is a part of China...BUT it has its own laws including extra rights and privileges. And you should have noticed one VERY IMPORTANT country missing from your list - you were supposed to list it at the bottom.

We then finished our study of the Nile.

We had a lot of "things" packed into one day...Late Start, Lock-Down Test, Career Fair, etc. I reviewed the Career Fair and showed you the online Map Prep sites. Tomorrow will have us do a ROMOTHINK and cover some info about the Nile. Bye...

Halftime

OK, my little minions. I am quickly posting during halftime of tonight's big game. The US is beating Mexico 1-0 in Columbus. While I root for both, like millions of others, I win either way. But my taxes stay in this country, while my family contributions cross the border.

We will have the Asia Map Test next Tuesday, including the Middle East. Next Friday's Map Test will cover Oceania AND some of Southeast Asia. To help you prepare, check Lizardpoint for Asia and the Middle East as well as Sheppardsoftware for Asia and the Middle East.

Second Half just began. You better appreciate how much I am sacrificing to get this post out...

Today's class focused on the African Slave Trade from West Africa as well as Apartheid in South Africa. We watched some short vids and then you took some notes of information from the vids and what I shared with you from my twisted mind. My heinous respect for the actions of the Viking raiders and other conquerors was based SOLELY ON GENETICS and the importance of diversity.

I gotta go focus on the game...you peons (anyone know the origins of that term?) have too much of my attention right now - and Mac/Frankie/Chris/Peter will continue to have my spying eyes looking out for more stupid assumptions. Perhaps someone would be interested in starting a thread here of what should have been included in your notes.

Creativity at it's Finest?

We mocked one another's New Africa maps and continued to get settled in our new room (E5). I assigned you an in-class writing task, requiring you to write either two separate paragraphs or one page-long story about two countries. You must deal with the following:

1 Economic Situation: Resources, exports, poor/rich?
2 Capitol City: Location
3 Military Situation: Big spenders? At war?
4 Dominant Ethnic group.
5 Any other comments/tidbits

Staple it to your map and turn it in. Try to have some fun with this, but be realistic too. No armies of 10-foot zombies that eat sand and poop diamonds. See ya...

Nomads

We moved to a different location today. E5 is our new, permanent home. It has these weird things that let you see through the wall. Yeah, that reads funny doesn't it? You can actually SEE THROUGH THE WALL! I think they're called "windows" or something. Bye bye rickets! We'll complete the move over the week as I take time to set up the tech and space things out (where exactly to put the desk, doc camera, etc.?

In class today, I collected your New Africa maps - a bit disappointed in some efforts. You'll write your paragraphs explaining the rise, solidification, successes, and/or setbacks of your two chosen countries in class tomorrow.

We went over the Africa chart, which I saw some of you frantically trying to fill in/complete in class. Again - a little disappointed. I hope everyone picked up the info about:

• the diamond trade (Blood Diamonds and DeBeers' hoarding through monopolization)
• 8-10 key physical features of Africa (maybe someone can be kind and leave them in a comment)
• Parallel of nothingness (where is that, again?
• European Imperialism (taking any resources OUT of Africa)
• The differences between South Africa and Zimbabwe in dealing with post-Apartheid solutions.
• Salt-Gold/Copper Trade and Empire trends in West Africa
• US withdrawal from Somalia
• Immigration supporters
• And many other things.

We looked at some maps of Africa (resources,vegetation, climate, etc.) and I also passedout a Nile River reading. You'll do that in class tomorrow.

I distributed the Asia map, for which we'll have a test next Tuesday. I have decided to add Oceania for next week as well - so there will be another map test on Friday. That means the week after next will see Europe, followed by Latin America & Caribbean, and ending with USA/Canada (with states and provinces).

Non-Geography tidbits:
We can void nearly ALL baseball stats from the mid1990's through 2006. How sad.
And continue feeding me more funny vid clips - I am downloading them for future in-class viewing.

I found a map of Starbucks/McDonald's proliferation. Wow. But remember that Starbucks will be closing 300 stores soon, while McDonald's has seen record profits. People are ditching the $4-$5 cup o' joe for some extra fries with that in this downtrodden economy. If you are interested, try deciphering the economic indicators.

Lastly, let's see what Bill Gates is up to nowadays. Check out TED for more info. Great site - may even offer some EC for viewing some talks.

Maps and Tails

Today we watched a video about the physical and human geography of Africa. It is a basic intro to the continent - and you had a viewer's guide to fill out and turn in. We'll take a test on Africa (the chart you did yesterday, today's video, and other things in the future) in two weeks. Tomorrow will have you complete the map test in class and do some extra work on 2-5 of your countries. You'll have to explain to me the history, culture, and economics of a region on your New Africa. Lastly, when presented with Lucy, many of you referred to her (and us) as monkeys. WE DO NOT HAVE TAILS! Oops, maybe I am wrong. Now go back and study!

No, nothing gross or inappropriate...unless you count reading the text (p. 277) and sorting information (about Africa) in a chart as gross or bad. From your perspective, it could be...but from mine, it seems perfectly acceptable. You'll have some class time tomorrow to finish today's chart and/or your New Africa.

Has anyone ever been to a Wal-Mart or Target? There is a guy who has presented a video about the spread of each over time - similar to how a viral outbreak spreads across a community or region. Check out the Wal-Mart Virus and Target Virus (which looks like nuclear explosions) for some scary entertainment. Any trends or especially scary things evident?

Whiddling Away

You'll need to start bring your books every day. Yeah, I know - but people want us to do more "traditional" geography. To start, we'll explore Africa.

Grades arrived at home. I am sure some of you are either ecstatic or disappointed. If you want to discuss your final grade, please come see me and we can always try to figure things out.

We are going to look more closely at Africa for the next couple of weeks. We are exploring how the continent was carved up by European powers without consideration of ethnic groups. In class, you created your own, more "natural" African nations. By following Ethnic, physical, and historical maps, you hopefully solved the border problems (yeah, right).

Tomorrow, you will have more time to finish your New Africa map. I'll also have a graphic organizer for you to complete. The skiers can pick it up in the morning. And do not forget about the Africa map test on Friday! As of now, there are now capitols...so be good!

What a Super Bowl! I was hoping the Cardinals would pull it out, but the better team won, which we have to respect. Depressed: Economically and Mentally

We watched "The Ultimate Resource: Pennies a Day" in class. There are 13 questions to answer, which should help you write your half-page summary/review. Following that, we had a ROMOTHINK. To check that out...look at the link to the right. Tomorrow will be a "correct the homework" day. And a word to the wise...I will NOT be in school on Monday, but expect a quiz on Ch. 21 Tuesday. While in class on Monday, you will label a map, for a map test on Friday.

Trouble with Trillions

We watched an episode of The Simpsons today, while I gave you time to complete your work that is due Friday.  I shared a "Didja Notice" with the 4th period class - I recommend everyone to learn more and revisit episodes of The Simpsons from time to time.  They have deeper, more subtle commentary and humor, which can only be recognized and appreciated with awareness and knowledge.  We will spend some more time tomorrow on Microloans and do a ROMOTHINK.

On a side note - promoting civic mindedness and all - would you please keep an eye out for the vandals in class? The desks were cleaned last week and they had to be cleaned again today. Some interesting language has even been carved into desks. I mean, if you have to poop, ask for a pass - don't carve your request using the "s" word into your desk! Seriously, don't necessarily rat - but do help me by informing me of any messes when you sit down. And the best thing to do is simply tell your offending peer that it is not cool. Thanks...

Lastly - saw a funny zombie flick over the last two days. Cheesy blood and "stunts" (similar to the Indian movie we saw a clip from earlier). But still waiting for Dead Snow.

MicroLoans

We began studying Chapter 21: Women Micro-Entrepreneurs in Africa. You were given about 5-10 minutes to answer six questions regarding the picture on page 310. Then we watched a Frontline segment concerning microloans in Uganda. You can watch it here. If you want to learn more about the organization featured in the story, check out Kiva. I personally believe this concept to be incredibly helpful and rewarding (if administered correctly). Try to make sure you understand the economic policies of Dems and Repubs and how this story connects to the US and our current economic crisis. The rest of class time was used to finish the guided reading. Tomorrow will see us looking more at te text and pictures while also completing the vocabulary chart.

Calories, Climate, and Labor

You will need your Geography textbooks in class tomorrow. We'll be studying Chapter 21 and microloans.

Blogging...some tips.

Interesting to see many of you taking advantage of this blog extra credit. But you must be aware of some things:

1. EVERYTHING can be seen by others.
2. EVERYTHING is recorded...somewhere.
3. Absolute privacy does NOT exist on the internet.

That being said, I look forward to positive discourse and a free-flowing exchange of ideas. Many of you did very well in today's final exam (there are still a couple of people who have to take it tomorrow). Some of you fell flat. I will be curious to hear and read what happened. drop my a comment here or email me. I'll try to send final grades to everyone tomorrow - if I get the time.

Until then - enjoy your 3 day break, consider dropping by tomorrow morning and helping out (cleaning desks, sorting stuff, labeling, etc.) your favorite teacher who thoroughly enjoys messing with your minds. The looks on some of your faces this morning in English were priceless.

Cost or Benefit?

So many questions about "Will this improve my grade?" and related issues. Simple - if you scored a "C" or above, your overall grade will probably improve. Otherwise - who knows? For your next super-long study session, might I suggest something like this. Although - it could get uncomfortable as time goes on...

As far as EC goes - I need some help getting the room cleaned up and posters displayed - if anyone wants to come in before noon tomorrow and help out, I might be inclined to look on you kindly when I fill in grades.

One Down...

So you have finished one of the two finals for class. Now there only remains the economics portion. I will be emailing the government test and simplification handout to your parents through the portal on Friday so they can see what you had to be ready for today. Needless to say, some will not be too happy with your results.

I am really hoping EVERYONE studies and is calm for tomorrow. If you ever need a tension-breaker, go here and enjoy one of the earliest internet sensations. I honestly hope you all do well, which will only happen if you study. Check out your readings, practice the quizzes, and prepare yourself for 76 (yup - I added 5 more) questions tomorrow!

A Whole New World

Just a quick reminder to everyone that President Obama is a human being. He is not the Messiah able to cleanse us and fix everything. It will take time - a lot of it- to implement much of the change that was promised. The only difference may be the "feeling" some of you have - otherwise much will remain the same for some time.

I have a link to this site now from the SW home page (Teacher Web Pages), so I encourage everyone to pass along the word to others. Oh - and what do people think of me adding pic/vid updates from the classroom?

Lastly - you should not be reading this while you know there is much to study. And I know tomorrow's test cannot be that difficult since someone aced it this afternoon. And for all of you fretting so much, you probably need this book. Just relax.

AARRGGHH!!!

Before next quarter, everyone needs to check out this site and perhaps buy some of these. Seriously, I REPEATEDLY stated the following: The government test will cover the basic terminology we reviewed last Friday and you will be allowed to use your Constitution Simplification packets for the Constitution part (for which I told you to study what was where). The econ test covers EVERYTHING in chapters 1-5, and 13. It really is frustrating answering the SAME questions over and over again. Do not ask again. Or I will simply make the test impossible for everyone. Like how many times the word "people" or "us" or "the" or God" is ever written. I'm done - if you have been paying attention in class, you will be fine. If not - suffer like you have been - you deserve it.

Money, Love, and Tests

They all go hand-in-hand, don't they? We discussed the ROMOTHINK (link to that site is on the right) after I explained everything you should have for next week's tests. Interesting discussions today - Many people valuing love over money, which is a nice contradiction to perceived norms. But I seriously want you to consider the following: Can love really exist f it is not reciprocated? Must both individuals have love for one another in order for one to love the other? Or can love be a one-way street? I look forward to reading your comments. And don't forget to register with BLOGGER so I know who is actually appearing here.

Brains: Teens and Zombies

Do not forget to study...make sure you have your government notes, constitution simplification, econ readings (1-5, 13), econ quizzes, econ study guides (crosswords, fill-in-the-blanks), and your brains - however useful they may be!

Tell me that would not be amazingly perfect...Zombie Nazis. Even though there really isn't much difference between the two (they're both brainless, murderous, decaying, soul-less beasts), I've always hoped for the melding of Zombies and history.

Q Score

Anyone know what a REAL "Q Score" is? We finished the last of the econ quizzes today. I was happy to see some high scores - even some perfect 10/10 results in each class. I hope everyone takes the next 7 days to study what we have learned and not be surprised by anything administered next week.

On Friday, we'll review for the Govt test and look at the credit mess in the last econ packet I handed out.

Tomorrow we will take a little break from all of this econ/govt stuff and look at the teenage brain. I anticipate high interest and some insightful discussions in class and at home after we finish on Thursday.

Everyone check your email you have assigned through the portal - I sent something this afternoon to parents and students. Adios...

Flash Drive

Simple - get one. At least 1GB. I'd recommend a 2GB. It will solve many of your problems if you miss a video or if your email and printer do not cooperate.

Whining, Complaining, and Testing

OK - so the portal is updated with your quiz results. I anticipate EXCELLENT scores for next week's final exam(s), but you have the Ch. 5 - Market Clearing Price quiz tomorrow. Hopefully, you will earn at or above your average of the previous four quizzes. If not, I have this great book, "Old Time Punishments" that I could loan your parents.

Worry not about your grades right now - they do NOT reflect participation. Also, I have to add essay grades. The only major problem is if something is missing and/or there was no increase seen in your quiz scores. Otherwise, you can simply self-evaluate your essays and look forward to the exam(s), which should determine your final grade.
