OK, my little minions. I am quickly posting during halftime of tonight's big game. The US is beating Mexico 1-0 in Columbus. While I root for both, like millions of others, I win either way. But my taxes stay in this country, while my family contributions cross the border.
We will have the Asia Map Test next Tuesday, including the Middle East. Next Friday's Map Test will cover Oceania AND some of Southeast Asia. To help you prepare, check Lizardpoint for Asia and the Middle East as well as Sheppardsoftware for Asia and the Middle East.
Second Half just began. You better appreciate how much I am sacrificing to get this post out...
Today's class focused on the African Slave Trade from West Africa as well as Apartheid in South Africa. We watched some short vids and then you took some notes of information from the vids and what I shared with you from my twisted mind. My heinous respect for the actions of the Viking raiders and other conquerors was based SOLELY ON GENETICS and the importance of diversity.
I gotta go focus on the game...you peons (anyone know the origins of that term?) have too much of my attention right now - and Mac/Frankie/Chris/Peter will continue to have my spying eyes looking out for more stupid assumptions. Perhaps someone would be interested in starting a thread here of what should have been included in your notes.

· Portuguese, Dutch, and the English pushed slavery into the Americas
ReplyDelete· Slaves filled labor needs in the American South for the British on plantations. In Brazil, which predominantly Portuguese owned, the slaves were used to harvest and collect sugar, cocoa, and coffee. Coffee was brought over from Ethiopia. In the Caribbean (mainly British-owned), the slaves were used to fill labor needs and they were used in sugar production, which the British used for their tea.
· Slavery was not originally racially oriented. African soldiers from other tribes enslaved other Africans through orders from African Kings. The Kings gave these slaves to the Europeans in exchange for tobacco, wine, and other European goods.
· The Europeans did not bring slaves into the Northern United States because the slaves did not function well in the northern climate.
· The economy of the Northern United States was dependent on industrial manufacturing.
· Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton did not see eye-to-eye. Aaron Burr later killed Hamilton.
· Jefferson promoted agriculture and was an agrarian.
· Hamilton promoted an industrial United States.
· The Slave Trade was connected to West Africa.
· Mexico did not have imported slaves because Spain had no need for them; the Spanish used native ethnic groups like the Aztec and the Inca for its workforce.
· Slavery had a major impact on the Americas.
· Africans sold other Africans into slavery to the Portuguese.

o When he was freed in 1990, the whole world was euphoric.
o He was beaten while he was in prison.
o Fear that he would be assassinated.
o Elected the President of South Africa in 1994
· Apartheid
o Apartheid was different from segregation
o Apartheid did not become law until the 1940s
o South Africa achieved its independence from the United Kingdom in 1910

· The Nile River was and is the center of the Egyptian civilization
ReplyDelete· Around 3,000 B.C., the Egypt was unified to form the Egyptian Empire
· The Upper Part of Egypt is actually the Southern Part of Egypt because the Nile River flows from South to North
· Water always flows down.
· During the Nile River’s annual flooding, it brings silt and creatures to the land. As the animals die and decompose, they replenish the dirt with their nutrients. This flooding actually helps fertilize the soil.
· The Nile River is important for all surrounding countries in Africa.
· To control the River’s flooding, the Nile is dammed up.
· The biggest dam is the Aswan Dam, which is located in Southern Egypt.
· Through the Aswan Dam, Lake Nasser was created.
· Because Lake Nasser exists in a hot, arid climate, the heat evaporates the water in its reservoirs.
· In many places, there are water rights issues over who controls the Nile River.
· In effect, Egypt practically “owns” the Nile River.
· Some countries cannot meet their water needs because Egypt would deny their requests for water.
· The dammed Nile River induces farmers to buy fertilizer to replenish their soil, as the natural flooding that would normally do so has been altered.
· The Nile River provides everything: Water, bathing, cleansing, washing, and waste disposal
· Animals are cleaned in the Nile. This causes unsafe drinking waters for other people further down the Nile.
Here are the Nile River notes.
