MicroLoans
We began studying Chapter 21: Women Micro-Entrepreneurs in Africa. You were given about 5-10 minutes to answer six questions regarding the picture on page 310. Then we watched a Frontline segment concerning microloans in Uganda. You can watch it here. If you want to learn more about the organization featured in the story, check out Kiva. I personally believe this concept to be incredibly helpful and rewarding (if administered correctly). Try to make sure you understand the economic policies of Dems and Repubs and how this story connects to the US and our current economic crisis. The rest of class time was used to finish the guided reading. Tomorrow will see us looking more at te text and pictures while also completing the vocabulary chart.

ReplyDeleteYou'll have time in class tomorrow. A lot of people will be missing for XC Skiing.
ReplyDeleteokay thanks
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that villages in Africa have internet-cafes where they can get on a computer.
ReplyDeleteOther than that, this is a great loan for the Littlefellers, not the Rockefellers.
The cafes use phone and electrical lines for data transmission. Some cities in Africa even have fiber-optics, which promise unlimited data transfer. And as far as computers go, the OLPC project and its "competitors" have been making nice inroads.
ReplyDeleteNew idea: Entrepreneur zombies.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea... I might invest/donate.
ReplyDeletep.s. 100% return, no matter how small the gain, is hard to find these days.
Great idea. My mom might be interested in a donation.
ReplyDeleteWe will discuss and plan for a "micro-investment club" next week. I promise.
